I do feel like we’ve been here before, several times in fact, but I’m declaring (another) day one. While I don’t tend to go with Mondays, first days of the month, birthdays, or similar, when making a start on something, it actually pleased me to realise that today (22 September 2024) is the day of the Spring Equinox here in Australia. Or “Ostara” if you’re into that sort of thing.
“So day one of what?”, I hear you ask, in my imagination at least… Well, as I have mentioned before, I’ve been finding it tough to get back on track with my health and fitness; even as recently as the past two weeks, I’ve been taken out of action by a cold virus of some sort, which affected my breathing, energy levels, and ability to function at anything about about 30% of normal.
But it gave me time to think (on top of all the thinking that’s been done already), and to reinforce the idea of going all in on a carnivore lifestyle. Possibly for the short term only, as a circuit breaker of sorts, but hopefully leading to an ongoing situation where I indulge in treats (both sweet and savoury) occasionally, but mostly adhere to an eating pattern that gives me energy, nutrition, a better body composition, and a healthy active life for the second half of my 50s, and then the decades that come after that.
I would REALLY LOVE to achieve that AND stop taking the medication for my type 2 diabetes – currently Metformin and Tradjenta. The more I read into this, the more I realise that they are doing a very good job of managing the symptoms (primarily high blood sugar levels), but potentially raising my insulin levels, and making my body VERY good at storing fat!
Anyway, I’ve taken a base reading from the scales, tested blood sugar, and will endeavour to track things over the coming weeks and months! I’ll be continuing the diabetes medication (I’m not stupid!) but will monitor to ensure they don’t start going too low. My next scheduled catch-up with my GP is in about 8 weeks, so that will be a good chance to discuss the next steps on that front.
I won’t be doing any benchmarks of body measurements or physical abilities – I’ll know if that’s heading in the right direction by “feel”, and whether my shirts start to fit again. So the starting stats:
Weight: 153.9kg
Body Fat %: 37.6%
Body Water: 45.5%
BF Weight: 57.9kg
Bone Mass: 8.8%
Blood Sugar: 5.6 mmol/L
I was quite pleased to see the weight has dropped a little since the last time I stepped on the scales, however the body fat percentage has increased – so it’s mostly muscle loss, a fact that is not surprising given my recent inactivity.
Excited to see these numbers start to change, more excited to think of how different things will feel, and super excited to hope that I’ll be back to running at some point!
Ostara Blessings to you all!
